One-Way Street

Far too many people take advantage of the kindness of others by preying on their good nature. Add in the pitfalls of romance and scamming behavior, and that’s a big facet to the world for many. This rock song by Troy Calder tackles the feeling of a one-sided romantic love affair.

Lyrics

She knows my weakness
So Here she comes
Serious as a heart attack.
Sayin'
"I need a little bit of green
Baby
And I can give you a lot of that back"
I say
"Okay
take what you need"
Then she goes away
There ain't no reciprocation
Absolutely no remuneration
I need a vacation from all of this frustration
No more degradation
I'm getting off this station
It's time to say goodbye
It's a one-way street
And she calls me up again
And says
"I need a little bit of change
And I can give you a whole lot of it back
Baby
All I need is a little bit of more
And I will return it someday maybe."
I say
"Okay
Take what you need"
Then she goes away
There ain't no reciprocation
Absolutely no remuneration
I need a vacation from all of this frustration
No more degradation
I'm getting off this station
It's time to say goodbye
It's a one-way street
So she calls me once more
And says
"I need a little bit of money
And I can give you what you want
Just wait this time it’s true.
You’ll finally get the honey
That is long overdue.."
I say
"No way
Don’t care what you need"
Then I go away
That’s right
I go away
There ain't no reciprocation
Absolutely no remuneration
I need a vacation from all of this frustration
No more degradation
I'm getting off this station
It's time to say goodbye
It's a one-way street
No thanks!

Behind the Music

Composer Thoughts

I think we’ve all had relationships, be they romantic or supposed friends, where we’ve felt taken advantage of by the other person. This can be monetary, with people always asking for help financially, but its all take and no give… or even emotionally, with toxic emotional vampires who drain the life out of you, figuratively. There comes a point where you just have to say, “No more.” And that’s ok to draw boundaries.

Troy’s Thoughts

When I read the lyrics, I immediately knew someone in my life like this. I had an ex who was a leech in every sense of the word. I’m a bit of a sucker for people I care about, and I learned the hard way that it’s sometimes a good thing to prioritize your own wants and needs.
