Comic Book Hero

A love song that uses the world of comic book heroics as a metaphor for the work that a good partner puts into their relationship. James Calder provides a bit of his country roots to this alt-pop with a country twist song.

Lyrics

I can’t see with X-ray vision
May not be able to lift a bus
Won’t be flying in an iron suit
But I still want to save us
I can’t run at the speed of light
Or find a wall that I can crawl
I don’t have any super powers
But if you need me, just call…
A real hero doesn’t need spandex
He doesn’t need some fancy cape
Just has to work hard to succeed
And he can get out of any scrape
Oh I can be your comic book hero
Cuz if there’s one thing that is true
You don’t need powers to be a hero
And I wanna be a hero for you
Yeah I wanna be a hero for you….
No, I wasn’t born with laser vision
But even without that I can see
That you’re worth fighting for, honey
And I will be the best man I can be
No I can’t control magnetism
But I hope that I can attract you
I’ve enough willpower to be a lantern
I need to focus on what to do…
A real hero doesn’t need spandex
He doesn’t need some fancy cape
Just has to work hard to succeed
And he can get out of any scrape
Oh I can be your comic book hero
Cuz if there’s one thing that is true
You don’t need powers to be a hero
And I wanna be a hero for you
Yeah I wanna be a hero for you….
The greatest power of a hero
Isn’t their superhuman gifts
It’s their ability to always find a way
That sends them jumping off of cliffs
Cuz they can take the leap of faith
Knowing that somehow there will be
Something that will always save them
Won’t you take that leap with me?
A real hero doesn’t need spandex
He doesn’t need some fancy cape
Just has to work hard to succeed
And he can get out of any scrape
Oh I can be your comic book hero
Cuz if there’s one thing that is true
You don’t need powers to be a hero
And I wanna be a hero for you
Yeah I wanna be a hero for you….
I will be…
Oh I will be
Yes I will be your hero, it’s true
Because you’re already my hero
Yes honey, you’re my hero tooooo!

Behind the Music

Composer’s Thoughts

Once again my geek flag flies freely. This was a song I wanted to do for quite a while. I think that superheroes are a great metaphor for the ups and downs and struggles of relationships. My deep affinity for comics goes way back and one of my favorite television shows growing up was called “The Greatest American Hero.” The show doesn’t hold up well with modern viewing, but what does hold up is the amazing theme song “Believe it or Not.” Composed by Mike Post with lyrics by Stephen Geyer and sung by American pop singer Joey Scarbury, the theme song was a hit even outside of the show… reaching #2 on the top 100 billboard charts! That’s an amazing feat indeed. So, I wanted to do a song that captured that same feeling of awe and wonder that their song did. It’s up to you to determine if I succeeded.

James’ Thoughts

I think I speak for most everyone when I say that superheroes like those in the Marvel and DC universes are just awesome. So a song that captures that feel while still being grounded in reality? Obviously I wanted in. And the music video is a pure masterpiece!
