Mother Hear Me

An impassioned entreaty by a young woman for her mother to see her as an adult. Anastasia gives this song its authentic heart, because it was very much based on real events. Folk pop ballad with an epic feel.

Mother Hear Me

Lyrics

Mother can you see me
Mother can you hear
Mother why can’t you trust
The one I hold so dear
You say he is someone
That you barely know
But you should know me
And the judgment that I show
Mother please listen
To the beating of my heart
Can you see my tears
When you keep us apart
Yes I am the daughter
Who you have always praised
So please trust the woman
That your example raised
Yes I listened to your words
All these years I’ve heard you
So please listen to me now
My love is deep and true
Yes these things can happen
In the blinking of an eye
When true love finds us
The odds they do defy
You make think we’re rushing
That maybe we go too fast
But when things are so perfect
And I know that it will last.
Mother please listen
To the beating of my heart
Can you see my tears
When you keep us apart
Yes I am the daughter
Who you have always praised
So please trust the woman
That your example raised
Yes I listened to your words
All these years I’ve heard you
So please listen to me now
My love is deep and true
As proverbs in the Bible says
Parents teach children with your heart
Teach them all of your ways
And when grown, they won’t depart
Mother please listen
To the beating of my heart
Can you see my tears
When you keep us apart
Yes I am the daughter
Who you have always praised
So please trust the woman
That your example raised
Yes I listened to your words
All these years I’ve heard you
So please listen to me now
My love is deep and true
Yes our love is real
You can believe
Open your heart
And you will see
That your baby girl
Is all grown up somehow
The woman you made
You can trust her now
Please mother
Will you trust me now
Mmmm-mmmm

Behind the Music

Composer’s Thoughts

This was a big one, and goes hand in hand with another song, Back to Orlando. At the time, Anastasia was living in Spain, and I had been going back and forth on visits, when we decided to get engaged. She invited her mother and grandmother from Ukraine to come visit so I could properly propose in person, and everything went as she planned. But later that night, her mother began demanding her to leave me because it all happened “too fast” (although it had been over a year). So on the plane back, alone, I wrote this song to mirror what Anastasia wanted to convey to her mother. When we posted the music as a sound on TikTok a funny thing occurred. The vast majority of people using the song for their videos were Slavic women. Apparently, this is a cultural plea that resonates with so many young women for their mothers to see them as adults.

Anastasia’s Thoughts

Even now, this song makes me cry. I remember how hurt we both were with my mother’s actions. She has now come around, thankfully. In fact, she especially loves this song and said it did help change her mind and see things through my eyes.
